OVERVIEW
The longest on Mount Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit, is known for excellent acclimatization and breathtaking views of the Kilimanjaro northern slopes.
It is recommended to those who enjoy long trekking experiences in remote wilderness with a minimal number of other trekkers around.
It takes at least eight days to climb Kilimanjaro through the Northern Circuit, which is why the route boasts a very high success rate. An extended 9-day Northern Circuit Kilimanjaro climb with crater camping is also available for an incredible wilderness adventure on Africa’s highest volcano.
9 Days Mount Kilimanjaro – Northern Circuit Route Itinerary
Day 1: Lemosho Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp
Rainforest trek to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m).
Hiking: 3–4 hrs
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira Camp 1
Ascend into moorland to Shira Camp 1 (3,500 m).
Hiking: 5–6 hrs
Day 3: Shira Camp 1 – Shira Camp 2
Cross the Shira Plateau to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 m).
Hiking: 4–5 hrs
Day 4: Shira Camp 2 – Lava Tower – Moir Hut
Acclimatization hike to Lava Tower (4,630 m) then descend to Moir Hut (4,200 m).
Hiking: 6–7 hrs
Day 5: Moir Hut – Buffalo Camp
Traverse the remote northern slopes to Buffalo Camp (4,020 m).
Hiking: 5–7 hrs
Day 6: Buffalo Camp – Third Cave Camp
Gentle trek beneath Kibo to Third Cave Camp (3,870 m).
Hiking: 4–5 hrs
Day 7: Third Cave – School Hut
Steady climb to School Hut (4,800 m). Rest for summit.
Hiking: 4–5 hrs
Day 8: Summit – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), descend to Mweka Camp (3,100 m).
Hiking: 13–16 hrs
Day 9: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate
Final descent through rainforest. Certificates issued.
Hiking: 3–4 hrs
