Lemosho Route is the longest of the standard routes and is without doubt the most beautiful. Expect some of the most extraordinary scenery anywhere in Africa, with well preserved forests, sweeping moorland, heather forests and high desert. Lemosho Route also offers easy walking days and plenty of opportunity for altitude adjustment.
The route approaches the summit from the west via Lemosho Gate and one of the most remote quarters of the region. The trailhead is little more difficult to reach, so Lemosho can sometimes be a more expensive options route where seeing wildlife in the first days is possible.
7 Days Mount Kilimanjaro – Lemosho Route Itinerary
Day 1: Lemosho Gate – Mti Mkubwa
Transfer to Lemosho Gate (2,060 m) for registration. Trek through rainforest to Mti Mkubwa (2,600 m).
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Dinner and overnight at Mti Mkubwa.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa – Shira Camp 2
Trek across the lush rainforest and moorland to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 m) for acclimatization.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp 2.
Day 3: Shira Camp 2 – Barranco Camp
Trek across the Shira Plateau, descend slightly, and arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960 m), famous for the Barranco Wall.
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.
Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall and trek across alpine desert to Karanga Camp (4,100 m).
Hiking time: 4–5 hours
Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Trek to Barafu Camp (4,700 m) and rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
Early dinner and rest.
Day 6: Summit – Uhuru Peak – Mweka
Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at sunrise. Descend to Mweka (3,100 m) for overnight rest.
Hiking time: 12–15 hours
Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate
Trek down through rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive summit certificates and transfer back to your hotel.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
End of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure.
