Located 50 miles (80 km) west of Mount Kilimanjaro, there’s a remarkable but often overlooked volcano known as Mount Meru.

Standing at 14,980 feet, Mount Meru is an excellent standalone hiking destination or a perfect warm-up for those planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s particularly beneficial for altitude acclimatization, and after ascending Meru, some may choose to tackle Kilimanjaro with a reduced number of days.

Many who have experienced both peaks express a preference for the unassuming Mount Meru. Situated in the heart of Arusha National Park, Meru’s lower slopes teem with wildlife. To ensure safety against potential wildlife encounters, an armed ranger accompanies groups during the initial stage of the climb.

The trail traces the north rim of the crater, following a breathtaking ridgeline. Upon reaching the summit, the vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Meru crater below are truly unforgettable. Unlike the crowded conditions often found on Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru offers a tranquil and solitary trek. Accommodations consist of wooden huts.

Despite being around 4,000 feet lower than Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is still a formidable peak. It’s crucial not to underestimate its challenges, as altitude acclimatization remains vital for a successful summit.
